If nothing else, take some time and check out the photos of this pen. It is an exceptional example and that really sums up Sailor, is one of those pen brands that is iconic. Since 1911 and the brand remains one of the big three names in Japan. But it is also the smallest and most bespoke of those big brands. When you view Sailor catalogues, they are like wish lists. Many of the pens listed will be on 6 month backorder or other stories of limited production. You get the feeling that the designers and makers of these pens are holed up in snowy hide-aways. Creating unique pieces with secret skills; yet the product result can rival almost any other brand, at any price. Sailor is not a cheap pen. But what you get for the price is impressive. Especially when you compare it to other brands which want more.
This Sailor is the 1911 Profit Standard. It's their best know model line and it's quite traditional for a fountain pen style. The detail, finish and quality are impressive. The pen writes wonderfully and with this particular pen, it has an exclusive Sailor nib. The Zoom. Now simply put the ZOOM nib is a bold broad nib. This is what it does well. It's design is a ste beyond the average broad in that you can angle it ... more upright and the line thins down to a stout medium. While most know the trick of flipping a nib over to get a thinner line, the Zoom's bulbous taper is actually created so this is a third option and writing upside down flows as well as right side up. The line width being a medium fine in Japanese standards. All of this out of one 14K Gold 1911 nib. But the nib is best suited for bold, expressive script. Their cult status didn't appear out of thin air.
